XP East Students Visit New College for Spanish Taster Day

Two of our Year 10 students visited New College today to experience A Level Spanish. Students worked with current Year 12 and Year 13 students to improve their speaking skills. They talked about what their lives would be like if they lived in Spain, building on previously learnt vocabulary and grammar, and adding new language through conversation. They also looked at careers where languages can be an advantage.

E30 Fieldwork to National Coal Mining Museum 4th October

Students in E30 Year 7 will be visiting the National Coal Mining Museum on Wednesday 4th October. This fieldwork will be part of students expedition “From the Ground up”. We will leave school at 8.30am and return by 3.15pm. Students will need to bring a bag with:

A packed lunch (students on free school meals will be provided with a lunch), a pen / pencil / pencil case to complete work during the day and a warm coat as part of the day is outside.

If your child needs to take any medication, please inform their crew leader so that any necessary arrangements can be made.

C27 Visit to York Chocolate Story

As part of our expedition in Spanish this term, exploring the issue of child labour on cocoa and sugar plantations in Latin America and Fair Trade, C27 from XP and XP East visited York’s Chocolate Story. We learned about the origins of chocolate and how it is produced. Students were surprised to learn that chocolate has its origins in Mexico, and only came to Europe following the Spanish conquest of the Americas. The word that we use for chocolate comes directly from the Aztec word “chocolatl”, which was a cold, bitter drink mixed with chillies.Students tried this drink – not a popular choice with most! They also had the opportunity to try cocoa during various stages of the chocolate making process, and then made their own chocolate lolly.

Fieldwork 22/02/23

Just a reminder, as per the letter sent home on 09/02/23, E27 are going on fieldwork Wednesday. This will start and end within school hours so does not affect drop off and pick up time. Please ensure your child brings a packed lunch unless they are entitled to FSM, in which case one will be provided. Any questions please email [email protected].

Thanks all

C25 A Christmas Carol Fieldwork

If there is a better way for C25 to revise for A Christmas Carol, I don’t know it!

Last Thursday we took the students of C25 to the Savoy cinema for an exclusive private screening of Mark Gatiss’ National Theatre Production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in preparation for their mock exam on Friday. The students’ behaviour was superb and the production was excellent. It showed the disparity between the rich and the poor in Victorian society whilst giving clarity to the students on both plot and character development. We hope to be able to replicate this event with future production.

A special thanks to all the staff at the Savoy cinema who were so friendly and patient with both our staff and students.

E28 Fieldwork to Potteric Carr

On Tuesday the 12th of July, XPE year 7 students will be going on fieldwork to the nature reserve Potteric Carr in Doncaster. This will take place within school hours; students need to be on time for crew to register as normal and they will be back for a debrief during session 5. Students will be lead by an expert lead into the different species’ habitats that exist in Potteric Carr. We will have the opportunity to explore these habitats, and see the species we have been researching in person. We will study how these species have adapted to suit their environment, this will be followed with lots of time for questions. We should finish our morning with a guided meditation session before we head back on the bus to debrief our day. As we have been studying about animal habitats during our current expedition this is a great opportunity for E28. I have attached a kit list here to help students prepare for the day and weather. Any questions please contact myself or your child’s crew leader.

C27 Fieldwork to Shrewsbury

Year 8 across both XP and XPE will be attending fieldwork to Shrewsbury Prison. This is an opportunity for them to get inside a prison and experience what life would be like. Shrewsbury is a Victorian prison which is now used as a museum and is no longer a working prison.

We will be leaving school at 7:30 on Thursday 30th June. Please can students arrive no later than 7:30. We aim to arrive back at school between 3:30-4 traffic pending.

Y9 Fieldwork to Thackray Museum video

Y9s had a fantastic experience to Thackray Museum as part of the fieldwork for their expedition ‘You Give Me Fever’ last week. Students took part in workshops and enquiries around the museum which focused on the history of medicine over time. Student conduct was superb, and the fieldwork has helped us to broaden our understanding of the topics that we are studying. Check out the short video below for a brief overview.

Given Freely, Freely Given Fieldwork

An incredibly eye opening and powerful morning of fieldwork for Pioneer and Explorer over the last two weeks. As part of our expedition ‘Small Change’, we visited Balby Church to take part in their ‘Big Sort’ on a Monday morning, providing much-needed clothes, food, toiletries and household items for those who have very little.

Both classes have done the school and themselves proud with their contribution to the ‘Big Sort’ working hard alongside existing volunteers sensitively, respectfully, and with lots of compassion. Well done!

See a bit of the Big Sort for yourself below:

A number of students commented on how lucky they were in their home situation to have easy access to things that are so easy to take for granted, such as soap, basic food and water, and it made them feel more grateful for the things they have. And question what they actually need!

It was also really uplifting to see just how many things are donated, and the variety of donations, reinforcing the positivity and compassion of the local communities providing for those in want.

And yet it is shocking that we learnt that everything would be gone the next day when those in need queue up outside the church in the hope there is enough to go around.

What a wonderful operation being run at Given Freely, Freely Given, and what a privilege it has been for our students to be able to take part and work alongside these amazing volunteers.
