E24/Y9 completed an 9 mile hike in the peak district.
Why? Because for the students to understand the planning, preparation to start GCSE and Duke of Edinburgh, where better place to start than meeting the demands of the great outdoors as a first crew expedition. All students were a credit to XP East whilst on the hike, watch this video to see more!
9Pioneer and 9Explorer will be out on fieldwork on Thursday 12th September. The location and planned activities relate to our current STEAM expedition (the guiding question will be revealed later this week!)
The fieldwork arrangements are as follows:
Day 3 of E24’s first week back saw students visiting Sheffield Hallam University. This fieldwork was designed to further develop students’ knowledge and understanding of how to get to higher education, what opportunities are available and what university life is like.
Throughout the day students discovered the different ways to get to further education, whether this is by completing A Level courses, maybe BTECs or through an apprenticeship, some of the many different types of degrees which could be studied (who knew that Surf Science was a degree?) and what else makes up life at college or university – anyone for a game of Quidditch at the Harry Potter Society?
A tour of the university allowed students to see the different facilities that are available. The size of the lecture theatre made students gasp and the flight simulator, used by students studying aeronautical engineering, had them asking insightful questions.
At the end of our visit, feedback strongly showed that the majority of students would like to go to university and now feel more confident knowing how they can access this amazing opportunity.

Today saw all students returning to school following the summer break. It was wonderful to see students smiling and sharing how they are looking forward to the new school year.
For E24 (Year 9), it has been a busy first day back, with students rejoining their crews and starting the day with a summer check-in and inter-crew puzzles and challenges to get everyone warmed up!
We then had an informative introduction to the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme by Mrs. Ap Harri and discussed how we would be taking part in the scheme as crews. It’s fair to say everyone is looking forward to how they can take part in voluntary and physical activities and how they can learn and develop new skills.
This was then followed by the introduction to our new guiding question:
‘What makes me ready to start GCSE?’
This guiding question will be explored over the coming weeks as students prepare for their passage presentation which holds the key to them being considered ‘GCSE ready’.
Today saw the introduction of Case Study 1: ‘Where can I be?’
Throughout the day, students investigated how professionals in a number of trades and industries started their journey and investigated potential career paths starting at GCSE. This was done by a three hour career carousel of experts, including the police, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Polypipe and GoGreen, who visited XPE.
And this was all in one day!

A reminder for all parents of E24/Y9- Could you please ensure students PE trainers for tomorrow’s session 1 to school on Tuesday (first day back).
In addition to this, can students bring devices and headphones for Tuesday and Wednesday if available.
School starts next week on Tuesday 27th August where we will be embarking on a week of crew.
Throughout the week students are required to be at school at normal time (8:30am). We plan to finish all activities with the normal school day apart from Friday where students will return at 4:30 due to field work in the Peak District. Students will require a pen, pencil and ruler this week and a kit list has been sent out for Friday.
The week’s schedule will be as follows:
Tuesday – In school with a normal finish time of 3:15. There is no extended study in school this week.
Wednesday – In school with a normal finish time of 3:15. There is no extended study in school this week.
Thursday – Out of school on a University field work trip- normal time return to school of 3:15. Packed lunch is required.
Friday – Out of school on crew activities so students will need a backpack with a packed lunch, a bottle of water, hiking boots and waterproofs. Please check the kit list for further details of the required clothing. Please can students come to school in trainers, not their walking boots. We are expected to be back at school for around 4:30pm.
As this academic year ends, we’re already looking forward to our first week back!
School starts again on Tuesday 27th August, 8.30am. Students will require a PE kit for Tuesday and Wednesday, along with their usual stationery (pen, pencil and ruler) A kit list has been provided for Friday’s activity.

Tuesday: In school with a normal finish time of 3:15.
Wednesday: In school with a normal finish time of 3:15.
Thursday: Students are out of school today, within normal school hours. They should wear their usual everyday clothes and bring their bags and stationery. They will also need a packed lunch and a bottle of water (provided for students on FSM).
Friday: Students need to be at school for 7.45am. We will be out of school all day so students will need a backpack with a packed lunch, a bottle of water, hiking boots and waterproofs. Students on FSM will be provided with a pack lunch.
Please check the kit list below for further details of the required clothing. Please can students come to school in trainers, not their walking boots. We are expected to be back at school for around 5pm (to be confirmed during our first week back.)
Please refer to these important docs and ensure you and your child are familiar with them. A medical form will be sent home on Tuesday 27th; please return this to us on Wednesday 28th.

Students need to arrive at school no later than 7.45am, to ensure prompt departure at 8am.
We will arrive back at school at 4pm. However, this is dependant on traffic so we’ll keep you updated via social media.

E24 (Y8) students have spent the last two terms exploring if we are truly responsible for our own thoughts and deeds as part of their HUMS expedition, ‘Making Your Mind Up.’
Over the course of three case studies, they have studied Macbeth, looked at Hitler’s rise to power, analysed modern media and are now ready to share their learning with you on the following dates:
8 Explorer: Wednesday 5th June, 5pm-6pm.
8 Pioneer: Thursday 6th June, 5pm-6pm.
