Year 7 expert visit: Historian; Professor Natalie Tomlinson

This week year 7 got the chance to work with Prof. Natalie Thomlinson from Reading University. Natalie is a historian (originally from Donny!) and specialises in feminism and gender in modern Britain and is currently a co-investigator on AHRC project ‘Women in the miners’ strike, 1984-5’. Natalie gave a lecture on the miners strike and explained the importance and role of ‘oral histories’ in understanding the impact the miners strike had on our local communities as well as the role of women during this time period. Our students got to see how historians like Natalie find out about the past and inspired us at XP/XPE to conduct our own research about the Miners’ Strike by speaking to our own family members about this very significant and emotive part of our history in Doncaster.

XPD Outdoors

Mondays are by far our favourite day at XP – Out and about in the fresh air.

This week our activity was orienteering with a twist!

We brushed up and gained many skills during our session, from map reading, listening and speaking, riddle solving, XPD protocols, teamwork and embedding crew norms and expectations.

Here we are embarking on a mini orienteering session around the school grounds. It was awesome to see class crews remembering our fundamentals, circling up, listening to each other,  showing courage and compassion, working together and stepping up and stepping back to allow others to shine, and all being crew not passengers!

These are some of the riddles we had to solve – They all absolutely smashed it! Awesome work C29!

Next week’s session is another outdoor session – so please remember to wrap up warm. Looking forward to this already!

Getting smart in RE and Ethics

Amazing work in year 9 RE and Ethics group this week! lots of students choosing to access the pushing for four tasks to ensure they are reaching their potential! It is really great to see pupils pushing themselves! X27 and E27 and Miss Wilkinson!

Donde quiera que vayas

E28’s Pioneer had an outstanding session in Spanish on Today, they started off by going through ‘things they could do’ at the weekend and how to say this in Spanish along with where they would do these. Such as, Voy al cine. Voy a ver una película’ (‘I am going to the cinema. I am going to watch a film’).

Students then made their way outside of the classroom to conduct their surveys of what their peers were doing over the weekend, in Spanish of course!

During this task the students were impeccable in the way that they conducted themselves.

From their surveys they were then asked to write a paragraph of what they had found out about their peers’ weekend plans. This encouraged students to use the guidance provided to push to ‘excellence’ on the rubric given to allow them to assess where they are at.

Throughout  the session, Pioneer’s HOWLs and character traits were fantastic, they showed courage, integrity, compassion, showed craftsmanship and quality, worked hard, got smart and were all kind to others.

Well done!

PE Kit

This is just a reminder that all students need a full change of kit on days when they have PE on their timetable, this is a change of top and bottoms.

If students have PE in the morning it is advised that come into school in their PE kit ready for the lesson and have a change of clothes for after.

We are aware that the weather is starting to change and it may be cold while outside doing PE, for this students can wear a base layer or sporting pullover and sports joggers to keep warm.
