“The best is yet to come!”

After a few months of feeling lost and distant from one another, at the start of last term, Crew Anoa’i decided to reboot crew. We brainstormed ideas and listed our ‘WWW’s and ‘EBI’s (What Worked Well and Even Better If). We then came up with a plan to action these and change the atmosphere of our crew. Let us show you what we came up with.

Miss Buckley, our newest crew member, joined us in March. Since then, she has helped us all to perform better in every aspect; From voicing our opinions to respectfully listening to others, Miss Buckley has reminded us to be the best version of ourselves. Miss Buckley assures each crew member feels at home whilst achieving greatness in crew. Thanks Miss Buckley!

On Friday 29th April, World Wish Day, we raised money for our chosen charity Make-A-Wish UK. Five brave students dressed up as fairies and went around both XP and XP East granting wishes for both students and staff. We loved seeing our crew show courage and entertain other students with their magical presence. We raised a total of £50 and have donated this to the charity. Here you can see Fairy Sasha (Jacob) and Fairy Gertrude (James) busy at work cleaning the cupboards for Miss Taylor. Well done lads!

On Wednesday 11th May The Wood Foundation came into our crew to observe us and learn about our unique way of learning. The Wood Foundation got involved with our weekly emotional check in by choosing one of the emoticons provided and explaining why they felt that particular way that morning. As it was a Wednesday, we were looking at our Wise Wednesday slides; A slideshow that highlights a topic of conversation regarding life skills and the understanding of managing these skills. The topic of this crew session was ‘Tattoos and Piercings’. This topic sparked lots of great discussions around the age at which you are allowed to have tattoos and piercings and whether this age limit should be raised or not. It was great to have The Wood Foundation join us for crew that morning, as we feel this type of crew session demonstrates one of our strengths, as a crew, the best. We love a good debate!

On the 13th May, during an afternoon crew session, Miss Mitchell kindly organised a party to celebrate April’s, Théa’s, and Nikodom’s birthday. In this crew session we had food, drinks and we listened to music. This was a memorable way to end the week where we could enjoy ourselves and have quality time to spend with each other. Here you can see Nikodem and Fin showing their amazing dance moves.

During the last few weeks of last half term, we were given the opportunity to plan our own crew sessions. This is called Student Led Crew. In small groups we created a plan for a crew session. We had to think about the structure of the session and what the students would take away from it. In these groups, our crew came together to create some fun activities for us all to enjoy. This half term we will present these to each other and decide which session to do first.

Finally, on Wednesday 25th May everyone brought in different breakfast items, such as croissants, pancakes, apple juice and chocolate milk. Miss Buckley even baked some blueberry muffins for us all. They were scrumptious! This was a really nice way to come together as a crew. It made us all feel relaxed and it gave us a chance to check in properly with one another. We would definitely do it again in the future, as the food was delicious and the company was great!

It has been great to see crew Anoa’i find themselves again. As a crew we have found our new dynamic and we wish to continue working on this moving forward. It is essential for us, as a crew, to feel comfortable within each other’s presence each morning. It allows us all to express ourselves and enjoy the time we have with each other. We are heading into the last half term of Year 10, a scary thought for most. Crew Anoa’i have found that with the help of their crew, they can achieve greatness. We’re excited for this last half term. Watch this space, Crew Anoa’i are back!

#BackOnTrack

Crew Da Vinci plus Miss Cocliff

Crew Da Vinci our first week back we decided to have a just dance competition and Miss Cocliff decided to join us before we went out to the lakeside with the other crew’s in our year group to celebrate 100% attendance from every crew member! What a way to finish on a friday busting some moves out.

We enjoyed having Miss Cocliff in our crew session and we hope she will be coming back in soon! PS. We have to say that she has the best dance moves going!

Madrid 2022 Schedule and Itinerary

We are posting details of our fieldwork visit to Madrid, as a reminder of the measures that parents and carers need to take prior to our departure from the UK, in order to comply with the Spanish authorities’ current travel requirements:

From 12.45 p.m. on Tuesday 21st June, students who have NOT received two Covid-19 vaccinations must take a PCR test (currently available for £39.00 from the Frenchgate Centre) and report the results to [email protected]. This test has to be taken within 72 hours prior to our arrival in Spain.

Students that HAVE received two Covid-19 vaccinations must present proof of their vaccination status, either by bringing in a printout of their medical confirmation or by sharing a screen-shot of their Covid status on the NHS app to: [email protected].

On Wednesday 22nd June or Thursday 23rd June (i.e. within 48 hours of our departure) ALL participants must complete an online health declaration by logging onto this website: https://www.spth.gob.es

Students and staff are really looking forward to this fieldwork visit, as we are sure to have a fantastic experience! The final itinerary and FAQs document will be e-mailed out separately to all parents and carers.

Please note that the Presentation of Learning for the visit, originally scheduled for Monday 18th July has had to be brought forward to Friday 15th July from 4.00 – 5.00. We look forward to seeing our parents and carers there.

A future in Sport

Yesterday C25/ C26 BTEC Sport students had the opportunity to listen to Nick Limber and his background in football. Nick shared with the group his football journey and his career highlights.

Students were able to understand the commitment and dedication required in such a popular industry. He chatted about the different career pathways and the higher education opportunities available.

Thanks for coming Nick.

What connects the Swahili verb “to build” with our E25 Spanish group’s new topic?

The answer is “kajenga”, or its more commonly-known abbreviation “Jenga”. This week our E25 / Year 10 Spanish students constructed towers made out of this 1980s classic wooden brick game to replicate the human towers, or Los Castells, formed by the inhabitants of Tarragona – a tradition that has taken place for over 200 years. They discovered that these human towers can reach as high as 15 metres, and that other than helmets worn by children that scramble to the top, there are no safety nets nor harnesses!

E26 ‘Hold Back The River’ Peak District Fieldwork

Year 9’s current expedition ‘Hold Back the River’ has the guiding question, ‘how does water shape our world?’

During this expedition, our geography content is focusing on river characteristics from source to mouth, river processes, formation of landforms as well as the cause, impacts and responses of flooding. As part of this, we are applying the theory of river processes and characteristics to the field.

On Friday 17th June, students will visit Edale in the Peak District, they will work together to collect data regarding the width, depth, velocity and load of rivers. We will also be capturing the beauty of a river by completing artwork.  This data collection will allow us to accept or reject our hypothesis once we have analysed our data in our maths lessons.

Students will need to arrive at school no later than 8:15am so that the register and kit check can be completed before leaving school.

3 Peak District waterfall walks not to miss

It is also essential that all students bring all of the kit on the KIT LIST so that they are fully prepared for the fieldwork; this includes a packed lunch and water to drink. Students will need to ensure they have suitable walking boots/trainers as well as wellies or a pair of trainers they can get wet – we’ll be going in the river to collect the data!  If there are any problems in getting the appropriate kit before this, please email your child’s Crew Leader.

Students will be returning to school for 3:15pm (if traffic allows). Please ensure that you complete the ‘Medical Form’ which will be given to students this week and return it to Crew Leaders/expedition teachers as soon as possible.

Many thanks in advance for your support with this!
