Both 8Explorer and 8Pioneer have been set extended study (homework) in HUMANS.  The task is to answer questions about George and Lennie, based on the opening extract of OMAM.  The work is due in on Thursday 20th September.

The questions – and other helpful resources – are available on Google Classrooms.

There is also an extension task for those students up for a challenge!

Don’t forget that all students are encouraged to stay for extended study 3.15-4.30 Monday-Thursday, where they will have access to staff and laptops to help them complete their homework.

Any questions, please see Mr Brown, Mrs Parker or Mr Ryder.

Over the Top!

Wow!  What a start 7 Explorer have had to kick off their very first expedition at XP East!

During our Immersion Week, we have had two experts visit us.  Our first expert shared a selection of fascinating artefacts from World War 1.  We enjoyed handling the artefacts and then asking questions.

Billy asked: “Why does the shell casing have a carving on it?

Rosie asked: “What do the different badges represent?

Our second expert was Frank who races pigeons.  We invited Frank in to talk to us about his pigeons after we had watched a mystery clip about how important pigeons were during World War 1.

We all wrote a message and then Frank chose four messages which were attached to the pigeons.  Take a look at our video which shows Florence releasing one of the pigeons.

We are now all waiting to see whether the pigeons arrived home safely and Frank received his messages.

Feathers crossed!

HUMANS: ‘Of Mice and Men’

8Pioneer have had a brilliant session this morning analysing Steinbeck’s use of language and imagery in the opening chapter of our anchor text, ‘Of Mice and Men’ (OMAM).

As ever, the students’ thoughts generated some really interesting and insightful discussions.

Well done to Adam M, Brendan K and Callie S for volunteering to be our first readers, too.

Equipment.

Hello and welcome back, I hope everyone has had a fantastic holiday. As expeditions will commence on the 2nd of September I thought it would be useful to share our equipment list and P.E kit information. As part of our HOWLS – Working Hard – students are asked to arrive for class on time and prepared.

Expedition 360: a time for reflecting on our first year as Crew.  Some really insightful and powerful discussion in 7 Pioneer today about what Crew means to them.

Digi-Crew Production Meeting

Digi-Crew met again with Jon Kelly on Thursday 5th July. We had a production meeting to discuss the running order of our radio show, and what we can do to hook the listeners in and keep them interested.

Here is our running order:

  1. Jingle (to remind the listeners what they are listening to.)
  2. Intro (snappy and to the point.)
  3. Music (get people listening and hook them in.)
  4. Spoken link (guide through the subject and help the listener make sense of it)
  5. Vox Pops (interviewing the people in the “outside world”)
  6. Jingle
  7. Spoken link
  8. Interview (“When is it right to make a stand?”)
  9. Music
  10. Feature (more information about ourStand Up Doncaster site.)
  11. Spoken link.
  12. Music
  13. Spoken link
  14. Jingle
  15. Interview
  16. Music
  17. Outro (round off the show and summarise what we have discussed.)

We then moved onto record our radio show. We all had a part to allocated, e.g I am being interviewed about reading my stand against bullying, and Brendan will be doing the spoken links.

Holly was responsible for going out into our XP community to record the Vox Pops – asking students and staff when is it right to make a stand, and what their pledge is to make Doncaster a better place.

We have now recorded everything, so watch this space for a broadcast date!

Digi Crew is go!

Today we were really excited to launch our new Digi Crew – and even more excited that our first project involves working with Jon Kelly from our local community radio station, Sine FM. We’ll be hitting the airwaves soon with our Stand Up! Doncaster broadcast, where we will talk about why it’s important to make a stand, our pledges to make our community a better place, all mixed in with some music!

We kicked off our first session with some media training, particularly focusing on radio presenting skills, and even made it into the recording studio where we made a start on our radio show.

Here’s Aran’s overview of today’s session:

Today, some students from XP East have been experiencing the life of a presenter. In XP, the community radio station is supervised by Jon Kelly. Jon gave each group a task to work on. The aim was to describe a colour to an imaginary blind person (this was much harder than we thought it would be!) After this, John gave us another activity – it was to describe a place in Doncaster.  It was almost like having to paint a picture, but with words!

He then explained that these exercises were to help us learn how to talk to an audience when in the recording studio. All of us had to answer a question from our last HUMAN expedition ‘Stand Up!’ about what making a stand means to us, as a community.

Catch us soon so we can update you next time!

Who in the World am I? (Part 2)

During our HUMAN session today, we have completed our first drafts of our autobiographies.  We are now peer critiquing our work, thinking carefully about giving kind, specific and helpful feedback.

So, for example:

Alesha and Adam are focusing on key events (have they been developed in sufficient detail?) which are ordered chronologically.

Louis and Chloe are focusing on developing a conclusion which reflects on previous events given.

Next session, we’ll be purple polishing our work in response to our partner’s critique and then start work on draft 2.

We’ll keep you posted…

Who in the World am I?

This week in HUMAN, 7Explorer have started work on our new expedition, ‘Expedition 360!’

We have started to write our own mini-autobiographies ready for our final product.

With titles like:

‘The Legend. The Myth. The Boy from Donny’ by Lewis. H.

‘All About Me… Not You!’ by Ben

‘Landing on my Feet’ by Frida

‘My First Steps’ by Noah

‘The Life of Eleanor’ by Eleanor

who could resist reading further to find out more about our students and the pivotal moments they have experienced in their lives so far?

Look at the passion and focus with which they are writing – amazing!

The most beautiful thing…

I think that this is the most beautiful thing I have ever professionally created.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, 7 Explorer and 7 Pioneer went on fieldwork to Treak Caverns and Mam Tor in Castletown as part of their STEM fieldwork. It must be said that the aerial drone footage of the Derbyshire hills from our DJI Spark is stunning, yet this is not why I think it is so beautiful.

In a country where I feel as though we are losing the true purpose of education, the footage captures an authentic kindred spirit of togetherness from our students – engaged within a joyful and wondrous exploration of the landscape. This is what we stand for, and as a school – this is who we are.

There are so many hidden and not so hidden analogies and metaphors within the movements of the students, that once I had finished editing my footage I just sat there and watched it at least 20 times (in total silence except for its hypnotic soundtrack). I know all of this sounds a bit weird, but I will look back on this video in years and decades to come knowing that we were out there… just trying to make a dent in the universe by exploring its beauty.

Unbelievable.
