C24 (Y11) Finishing times this FRIDAY

Hi all,

Our super Y11s have been incredible during their GCSEs so far!

Due to TONNES of exams, and also half term approaching, C24 (Y11), and ONLY Y11, will have a finishing time straight after their morning exam. They will therefore all need to leave site at 11:30am. All other students are expected to stay until 1:30pm.

There are also some revision sessions taking place for our Y11s over half term based in XP East:

Crew Ardern

Crew Ardern had the opportunity to be stewards of the community last week. We went around the school grounds to ensure it was looking beautiful. We were making sure to look after our planet and spread an important message about keeping our environment clean, enabling it to flourish! We discussed as a crew the importance of this!

After some hard work, we relaxed with a game of foot and hand tennis, which our crew absolutely loved!

Mental health awareness – Here at Last event

Students were the audience for an awesome event @XPschool and @XPEastSchool on Friday afternoon, we welcomed the band ‘Here at Last’ to perform their songs, alongside their messages around mental health and staying safe online. Thanks
@hereatlastband – our students loved this event!

C27 ACCELERATED READER RELAUNCH

As Crew leaders in C27 we have been re-looking at Accelerated reader and how the students engage with the quizzing function so we can support them to accelerate their reading progress.

The next step with this is for us to launch our myon programme providing students with thousands of books online which are compatible with accelerated reader. Students regularly complete a Star Reader test so that we were able to establish a reading age and book level for every student.

Reading is a key focus at XP Doncaster Secondary Schools as it is not only the first building block to allowing students to access their learning but it also plays a significant role in their life chances and their wellbeing. Studies have shown that ‘those who read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations. Reading for pleasure was also associated with better sleeping patterns’.

We are also looking to build habits for life as it has also been found that ‘adults who read for just 30 minutes a week are 20% more likely to report greater life satisfaction’.

Accelerated Reader is a nationally proven programme which encourages students to choose and read books at an appropriately challenging level and to take quizzes online to check their understanding and to develop their vocabulary. The feedback from each quiz is used to motivate students to make progress, to help students set personalised reading targets and to achieve their full literacy potential.

At XP Doncaster Secondary Schools, we expect students to be reading their accelerated reader book for 20-30 minutes a day. This is monitored during crew and students are held accountable for this by Crew Leaders.

We really need your support with this to ensure that your child is able to get the most out of this programme and allow them to fully access our enriching curriculum. To be good learners, students need to first be good readers.

To support you, I have attached a link to a website which allows you to search for books by AR level. This allows you to either check the reading level of a book that your child may want or allow you to search by reading level if you wish to buy them a book that will support their AR progress. “The aim of the Accelerated Reader programme is to develop reading skills. They can also be used as part of wider reading for pleasure, and we would still encourage students to read for pleasure widely in addition to their AR book.”

AR Book Finder

We are asking that you support us by monitoring your child’s reading, ensuring they are reading their accelerated reader book (which may be on my-on once the students are familiar with this or a physical book they have borrowed from our range of books) and reminding them to complete their daily reading.

Once you have read this post, please fill out the form below where there is space for you to record any questions.

C25, BTEC Sport

It was such a great session out on the 4G with the BTEC Sport students. Students were given session cards with different football drills to help develop their football skills. It was fantastic to see them set their own drills up in their groups and take ownership of their learning.

Well done Miss Bowser for setting all this up for the students.

Celebrating Awesomeness

We had an awesome community meeting to celebrate how awesome E27 are and the successes they are having in school.

This shows how hard students are working and that it is being recognised by staff in and around school.

See if you can spot yours….

Crew Rashford Tranquil Tuesday

Number the Stars – Book by Lois Lowry

This past week Crew Rashford have begun a new Crew book, which we have designated to read on Tranquil Tuesdays. We had a fab time reading outside in the sunshine and everyone read a section. It was amazing to see how great we work together as crew to support each other doing this.

Quiz your child, see what they have taken from it and what the book is about?

Looking forward to more Crew reading time over the next few weeks.

Upcoming experts and fieldwork

E27 are currently studying an expedition focusing on crime and punishment. Towards the end of our expedition we will be focusing on Doncaster and how we can make changes in our City! We will be creating a documentary about the issue to be premiered in September.

In light of this we have experts and fieldwork due to take place at the end of June. Our fieldwork will consist of a trip to Shrewsbury Prison on June 30th, a trip into Doncaster itself as well as experts from our local police force and prisons.

I will update closer to the time, I just wanted to give a heads up on the upcoming fieldwork date.

If you have any questions, or feel you could contribute to our expedition in way through your experiences or your career please feel free to contact me on [email protected].

Thanks

Miss Ibbotson

School Phone Lines

Our phone lines are currently defaulting to voicemail and we are working on getting this resolved.

We are able to pick up voicemails throughout the day and make outgoing calls, so in the meantime please either leave a voicemail or email [email protected]

We will endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible and hope to get the lines up and running as a matter of urgency.

Best wishes.
