Crew Takeover – Ali and Noah

As part of our crew takeover, me and Noah led a crew session based on integrity. We played some music and passed a chocolate bar round, similar to pass the parcel, when the music stopped a crew member had to eat the chocolate as fast as they could. A catch was that they had to eat it with a knife and fork, which made it even more challenging!

This was linked to integrity because there was a prize involved for whoever ate the most chocolate. Crew needed to show integrity to admit if they had eaten the amount they said they had.

Well done to our big winner, Dakota, who ate a whopping thirteen pieces!

STAR Reading Tests

Just look at that focus!

Crew Finch did their STAR reading test – a once-a-term reading assessment to track progress on our Accelerated Reader programme.  We dedicate one Crew session to reading every week, on top of the 30 minutes daily allocated during lesson time.  We also expect students to read for at least 30 minutes at home.

Reading for pleasure is so important for academic growth – you can read why here in this previous blog post.

Get Ready for Star Reader!

It’s time for Churchill Crew to take their Star Reader tests!

In Crew this morning, we worked our way through our latest Star Reader test to find out how we are getting on with our reading.

As well as reading twice a day at school, we reminded ourselves that we should also be reading at home for at least two hours a week.

Maybe this could be our next Crew pledge?

Student led crew

This week students in crew Mandela  have taken over with an academic focus. We started the week with Callie and Holly leading a student led crew with a maths focus. They kick started the session with a ‘Do Now’ engaging the crew with a version of Splat with a maths twist.

The main task was focused on angles, with a collaborative working style. The crew feedback for Callie and Holly really showed appreciation for the amount of work that had gone into the planning.

On Thursday Raven and Lewis led the second academic crew of the week. This had a Hums focus and led on from the work on the great depression. The boys used protocols fantastically and Lewis took the role as teacher and leader in his stride!

All the crew produced beautiful work and next weeks crew is going to be led by Beth and Alfie!

Welcome back, Ella!

We’re glad to welcome Ella back into Crew Young at the end of a shorter-than-usual school week. In Crew we have mostly completed our pledges for this academic year, and we have continued to develop our literacy and comprehension skills in dedicated Accelerated Reader time.

We’re also delighted that more of us have made it onto the positive conduct log as follows:

Maclaren: “Focused and on task, listening to instructions and first to pay attention when I am speaking to the whole class“. “Maclaren has worked really hard in maths today, his work is brilliantly presented and he has managed to give some really tricky questions a go. Thanks, keep up the fab work!“.

Eleanor has been proactive in her learning by emailing me questions related to her homework. I always spot her being kind in lessons helping others out when they are stuck. It’s great to see her work so hard in maths, thanks Eleanor!” “Dedication and hard work in lessons repeatedly. Needs no prompting to get on with work and always works hard!“.

Alesha: “Great contributions throughout the lesson!“.

Louie: “Some great contributions to peer critique during the lessons – kind, specific and helpful“.

Aaron:Talked me through the student side of AR Star Reader tests – thank you!“. “Aaron has gone from strength to strength with his work ethic over the past week. It culminated in a written response in HUMS which showed high level of language and understanding. He was nominated by Chris to share out his work and Mr. Brown took a photo of it to post on the website“. “Got smart with work in Spanish“.

Dominic: “Worked hard during Thursday afternoon’s STEAM session. Worked independently and made lots of notes about the different types of energy efficient housing we were researching. Good work, Dom – keep it up!“.

Our Crew Pledges

All individual members of our Crew have made Year 8 pledges, and we check-in on these every week just to make sure we’re all on track and offer support if we need to.

However, we have decided that we perhaps need to think of some Crew pledges that we will *all* be held accountable for.

We know that our punctuality is an issue, with a disappointing and, quite frankly, unacceptable 6 lates this week alone!  This is definitely something our Crew needs to improve on.  So, our first Crew Finch pledge is:

We pledge to get to school on time, every day.

We are quite a sociable crew, but this can sometimes disrupt our Crew sessions because we often all talk over each other, or don’t show one another respect (i.e. by not fully listening and talking off topic.) . Therefore, our second Crew Finch pledge is:

We pledge to participate fully and mindfully in all Crew activities, and be respectful to everyone in the Circle.

We will all aspire to keep to these pledges and will make sure that all of Crew Finch pull together to achieve these.  After all, we are Crew!

Welcome back, Maclaren!

This shorter week saw the very welcome return of Maclaren, fresh from his successes and increased medal tally after representing England in a Tae-kwondo tournament in Jamaica. Great work, Maclaren! In a shortened week, he has already made it back onto our praise log in maths: “his focus in class has been really impressive and his work has been at a really high standard” (Miss Haughey).

We also revisited the concept of “conflict” and worked in groups to address the following questions

  • what is conflict?
  • what causes conflict?
  • how do our bodies react when we experience conflict?
  • how might we seek to de-escalate conflict?

Crew Young, our “Youngsters” were ready to articulate their understanding of the issues and how – if they should experience conflict with others – they may be resolved.

Other “Youngsters” that made it onto the praise log this week:

Alesha initiated a really fantastic conversation in maths where there was a disagreement in their answers….keep up the fab work!“.

Adam completed (hums) homework early, to a good standard and with the option extension task completed well. Keep up the fab work!”.

“Brilliant effort on Ella’s homework. All questions answered in depth and the optional extension task was completed to a really high standard with lots of excellent effort! I’m impressed!”.

“In the test which they were given a 5 minute timer, Aaron managed to complete all questions and achieved 48/60. Despite his excellent score, Aaron showed compassion and respect for others too. He carried this work ethic over into the next task’…”.

Louis has been extremely attentive attentive in lessons today. He really excelled in the angles work, completing his work, helping others around him and also giving the GCSE problem solving question a really good go. Thanks Louis, keep it up!”.

“I have seen a vast improvement in Nathan’s efforts in getting smart & working hard these last couple of lessons in maths and I am really impressed with his contributions. He is compassionate to others around him, helping them when they are stuck which is lovely to see. Keep it up!”.

Keisha created a detailed fact file research project on Doncaster’s School for the Deaf in X-Block this afternoon. She chose a building that had relevance to her and the sign language studies she completes outside school, and showed craftmanship and quality in putting together the information on her doc. I was really impressed! Thanks Keisha!”.

Wow – an excellent week for Crew Young!

Mandela Research

Written and posted by Charlie R.

This week in crew Mandela

  • We researched the biography of Nelson Mandela after naming our after him. We researched key facts about Nelson Mandela,  we found out he was arrested for standing up for segregation and discrimination and he was put in jail for 27 years. A quote from Nelson Mandela that resonated with us all was:

I was not born with a hunger to be free. I was born free’

  • We introduced our new WH GS BK feedback for inside our lessons this is for behaviour and conduct and so teachers can praise students.

Me at my best

Today in Crew we focussed on ‘Acceptance’ and, more specifically, being happy with who you are as a person.  The quote above was used as a discussion point: what if we spoke to other people the way we spoke about ourselves?

It’s not always easy to focus to what we are good at, but we’re all pretty good at telling ourselves (and others) what we’re bad at!

So for this morning’s task we all had to share the following information with our Crew, to show “Me at my Best”:

  • I felt proud of myself when…
  • I am good at many things, including…
  • I am special because…

Not an easy task, but we all managed to be kind to ourselves and focus on what’s right with us, rather than what’s wrong.  As I said to my Crew, I’m special because I’m perfectly imperfect and we should all embrace that 🙂

We will be exploring how to be happy with ourselves some more over the next few weeks.  After all, we should all make more of an effort to become our own best friend!
