Vaccination – Covid Vaccine form

12-15 year olds will be offered the vaccine via the school-based programme.

Students in Years 10 and Year 11 have been given their consent forms. Check with your son/daughter that they have taken their form. The school vaccination nurses are in school on 10th November. If your son/daughter are currently in year 8 and 9 and did not attend school on their designated covid vaccine day and so missed their chance, then you can fill in the consent form and return to the school office to be added to the list. Please read the letter that goes with consenting and return the consent form to the school office by the end of this week (15th October 2021).  (A reminder if any student has tested positive for Covid 30 days before the vaccine date they cannot have the covid vaccine).

Last Day of Term-Early Closure

Please note that on the last day of this term, Friday 15th October 2021, the school will be closing for all students at 1:30pm after Crew. This is for staff to prepare for the new term. There will not be any provision for students to stay after this time so all students need to be collected or have left the school premises.

Many thanks

XP East School Office

Curation of C25 / Year 10 Spanish Final Product

The latest addition to Final Products created by Spanish students is on proud and prominent display on the upper corridor of XP East School’s top floor and XP School’s ground floor. The image is a composite representation of students’ digital or manual artwork, in answer to the guiding question: “¿Está el comercio justo en un mundo lejano?” (“Is trade fair in a distant world?”). In addition to building background knowledge about the wider Spanish-speaking world, our C25 / Year 10 students explored themes around social equity, whilst using the Spanish imperative to encourage fair trade practices linked to future benefits.

Mindful Monday

It was Crew Obama’s turn this week to take on some Monday morning litter picking duties. The weather was rather dull and overcast but at least we weren’t rained on! Pupils found a surprising amount of rubbish which may have blown onto the school site from elsewhere such as KFC chip cartons, but there were no complaints about clearing up after others. I was really impressed by the tenacity and determination of some Crew members to collect old items which had likely been hidden in the hedges until the leaves dropped.

Please check the school’s homepage to see the lost property for this week. Remember to claim what belongs to you!

Crew Marx back in action!

Last week in crew Marx we focused on our crew fundamentals and resetting our pledges! We have had a rocky start to term in crew with COVID and isolation so this was our opportunity, all back together, to focus on what we learned at Outward Bound!

we started off the week by litter picking around the school and looking after our community!

We then worked on our pledges and how we will work towards meeting our pledges before the end of term. Check out Cameron’s below who is really working on managing his distractions this term and I must say is smashing it!

We’ve added all our pledges and memories to the crew wall and reminded us what we need to get done and we can refer to them every morning!

Great start to term! Can’t wait to see the progress this year!

Madrid 2022 – important information

Good morning, we are at the stage where we need specific information about your son / daughter for the optional fieldwork. We would kindly request that if your son / daughter does not have a passport, that you apply for this as soon as possible. You can do this online, or pick up a form at a main Post Office. The travel company will need passport information in the next few weeks, and we would appreciate your support with this. If your son / daughter already has a passport, please could they bring it in and hand it to their Crew Leader, who will photocopy the necessary information.

To ensure that all participants are medically insured for the optional fieldwork, your son / daughter will EITHER need an EHIC card, OR a GHIC card. If the EHIC card will still be valid for the end of June next year, there is no need to apply for a GHIC card. If the latter is needed, please do this online, following the Government’s website for this. This is free of charge. Again, we would ask you to apply for this card, if needed, as soon as possible.

If there are any specific questions about either of these two documents, please ask at the Parents Meeting on Wednesday 6th October, we are looking forward to this, and are more than happy to help and support.

Preparing for SLCs – and the year ahead!

Crew Finch have spent the week preparing for the first Student Led Conferences of Y11. They will be reflecting on their Y10 mock exam results and sharing how they are preparing for the next round of mocks in November. Their presentations will also be focussing on the bigger picture of what they need to achieve in order to move onto the next stage of their learning journey, post-16 – and how they’re going to get there.

I’m really looking forward to welcoming Crew parents back into school for the first face-to-face SLCs in over a year. I sent out an email with the booking form link last week; if you’ve yet to book your slot please do so.

With the next round of mocks just a few weeks away, it is encouraging to hear that some students have already started revising. We will spend time in Crew looking at different revision techniques to find out what works best for everyone. Meanwhile, Crew have shared their revision tips with each other: the most popular method so far seems to be watching videos to reinforce learning.

I think that the time spent reflecting on their Y10 mock exam results along with last week’s taster day at New College has motivated Crew to really think more about how they are going to succeed, and this has been reflected in how they’ve been working in class. I’m pleased to see lots of praises for working hard and getting smart being put on the praise form from subject teachers for all Crew members.

It’s been a fantastic start to the year and our Y11 learning journey is right on track. Let’s hope it stays that way 🙂

E24/Y11 GCSE Spanish – Leaders of Their Own Learning!

This week some of our E24 / Year 11 GCSE Spanish students taught a mini revision session, covering topics they first encountered in Year 9, to their peers. Their creation of suitable resources to teach material such as musical genres (Frida and Aran), expressing positive and negative opinions of film types (Louie and George), and The Cognate Game and colours (Thomas and Ruby) was set as Extended Study last week and taught by the students themselves this week.

What our Spanish students discovered when they were reminded of being leaders of their own learning is that teaching is actually really difficult! However, a wide range of empirical academic studies conclude that learning by teaching is one of the most effective ways of developing retention and recall of key knowledge….and the students contributed to a bank of resources that they can all access when preparing for their GCSE examinations.

Tom and Ruby’s Cognate Game, followed by their revision of colours proved very popular…..

…..and we applied this knowledge to describe a photo (a GCSE writing task) towards the end.

Mini whiteboards were used by our student teachers to check for learning in their sessions……

…..whilst Louie and George chose to focus on building a wider range of adjectives to justify positive and negative opinions of film types.
