Y11/E24: Crew Young revision techniques

Over recent months I have been working with Crew Young in Y11 every Tuesday morning to explore revision techniques that I have successfully employed in my teaching over the years.

We’ve learned about techniques such as flash cards and the theory behind them, effective revision learning environments, the use of past exam papers and mark schemes, how to boost levels of motivation, the Cornell note taking method and digital revision applications like Seneca and Quizlet.

I often use the analogy of the forgetting curve to explain to students that we often forget knowledge over time, and without constant repetition and the revisiting of knowledge, it fades away over time. The following videos like the one below are great for helping students to understand the rationale behind such techniques. They help to reinforce the fact that there are no short cuts for beating the forgetting curve, and that with hard work and attention to the strategies that we have covered so far, we can indeed beat it.

If you’re reading this via our subscription email, please click through to our website to view the videos and photos.

Last week’s session on using Quizlet to recap knowledge was awesome.

Next step – extend these strategies to all Y11 students in XP and XP East in order to beat the forgetting curve together!

Y11’s amazing art!

We’ve had some absolutely amazing focus and some beautiful work created in today’s art session!

Y11s are working really hard to complete their coursework as they prepare to start planning and producing their final exam piece.

The theme for their coursework is ‘identity’ and it’s been really interesting to see what students have created to reflect their own identity.

Massive appreciation to Miss Dickinson for her support in these lessons and helping to keep everyone on track!

Crew Rashford – Prepping for SLC’s

We have really shown great character traits over the past few days preparing our SLC scripts. Working Hard and Being Kind to support each other to achieve a great presentation.

All invitations have been sent out and Crew Rashford are just polishing off their presentations.

We are looking forward to seeing parents /carers in school this time to showcase the wonderful work students have done.

See you soon.

Madrid visit June 2022 – updated travel requirements

MADRID 2022

We are in regular contact with our tour company to review arrangements and the latest travel advice ahead of our visit to Madrid in June 2022. Travel regulations and restrictions implemented by the UK authorities, our airline, and the Spanish Government are still subject to change at any time. Please read the current UK Government advice on entry requirements to Spain here.

Our current understanding is the students due to go on the Madrid visit are required to have two Covid vaccinations before the Spanish government will allow them entry into the country, and also there must be six months remaining on a passport, following our return date of Monday 27th June 2022 for it to be valid for travel.

Could parents and carers of participants please ensure that their child/ren receives both vaccinations against Covid, retain their immunisation record card and hand in to Mrs Mawby and / or show evidence of vaccination status on the NHS app to Mrs Mawby – some have already taken place on the school site, and the second round is planned shortly – and renew their passport if it is due to expire before 27th December 2022.

Many thanks

Crew Boseman Litter Pick

Last week saw Mr Stables’s year 7 crew Boseman take part in a little micro adventure,

After discussing what they would like to do in a short break from working hard in crew time it was decided that a litter pick would be the perfect activity on a Thoughtful Thursday.

In small teams the students entered into a friendly competition to see who could collect the most rubbish, they were all proud of their efforts and are excited to keep the school litter free for the future. They all pledge to be more responsible for their litter and what impact they can have on the local area. We look forward to seeing more of their hard work in the future!

C24 (Y11): key dates and information update

Just a quick update on some key information and upcoming dates for our Y11 students (including those all important GCSE dates!)

Firstly, we’d like to massively appreciate those students who are attending in-school and after-school revision sessions, including D6 on Saturday. There is no doubt that this level of commitment to their learning will be reflected in their final grades. Our current revision session timetable is here, but is being updated with more sessions which we’ll publish once finalised.

Although these are optional at the moment, we are targeting specific students to attend and we ask that parents support this. Teachers will be in touch with students and their parents with details of when they need to attend extra revision sessions.

In addition to focussed revision sessions, we are pleased to announce that Extended Study is back up and running for Y11 students Monday-Thursdays, 3.15-4.30. This means that students can stay for an extra hour after school to complete any extended study that’s been set or work on revision tasks with support from staff, away from any potential distractions at home. Please note that this is just for our Y11 students at the moment, but we’re hoping to offer to other year groups soon.

Here’s a quick look at some key upcoming dates – further information about each of these events will be published in separate blog posts:

1st Feb – 11th FebStudent led conferences
3rd February GCSE revision information evening for Y11 parents
21st Feb – 4th MarchMock exams 2
16th May – 24th JuneGCSEs (full timetable will be published at a later date!)
