Crew Young – Thoughtful Thursday check-in

E24/Y10 Students in Crew Young were asked recently to select a piece of work of which they are proud, to share this with the others, provide a context for learning, reasons for their choice of work, and outline the next steps. This reflection on their learning and articulation of the process formed part of a weekly academic crew check-in that is known as “Thoughtful Thursday”. Below the photos are the students’ own, unscripted comments on their selection of work:

On Thursday, I showed my piece of work that showed the most craftsmanship and quality. I went with the historical evidence annotation. This is because of my presentation and quantity of work, and it will really help me in the long run. Evidently, it also used many key understandings of the medieval period, and if I am struggling with work, I can easily flip back and see the work“. George.

I personally choose this piece of work due to the level of craftsmanship and quality of the work. The context of the work is linked to the examination of historical evidence to determine whether life in Medieval town was good or not for people’s healthcare. For the work we had to go onto “think link”, an online learning facility, study the information given, then write in note form. The lead up of this work was essential to fully understand the assessment question, and to grapple before we had the given knowledge. The assessment question asked was to write a clear and organised summary that analyses people’s living conditions in the Middle Ages, with supporting evidence from examples“. Eleanor.

I selected this piece of work to share in Crew as I was extremely pleased with the final result. Realism has not always been an area of expertise for me, and so I often struggled with proportions and shading to make things look 3-dimensional. However, with this piece, I felt as though I had really captured the essence of the original image, and so I was filled with pride at the final result. This particular piece inspired me to create more realism artwork, something I’m continuing to this day.

The context of learning behind this piece is that currently in art, we are working towards a comic-like portrait using steampunk fashion, hence the pipes in the drawing, a staple of the steampunk style.
To improve this piece of work, I could bolden some of the lines and possibly layer more shading to increase contrast between the light and the dark“. Summer.

I chose this piece of work because I really enjoyed creating it even though it isn’t finished yet. This artwork links to our history work as we are learning about the Middle Age and our artwork is about steampunk which was around the same time. Also, we are making masks which links with the world as we need to wear them to save lives“. Isabel.

This work was my history assignment that Mrs Batty had set us to complete over the next few lessons. What we had to include instead of this was the waste, water and housing aspects of life in medieval England, this would include things such as latrines, conduits and cess pits all of which had a vital role to play inside of medieval England“. Maclaren.

“I enjoyed this piece of work because of that it was one of my best pieces of work in my English book and i chose this because I couldn’t find my art book“. Dominic.
