Merry Xmas and Happy New Year from Crew 7DP!

Monday 18th Dec- We did some Accelerated Reader because we have not done reading in Crew since last week…. though we do read in human and steam as well!

Tuesday 19th Dec- We watched 30 mins of the Lion movie and we took copious notes (notices and wonders)

Wednesday 20th Dec- Today we did a Star Reader test to make sure we are on the right colour group for our reading material.

Thursday 21st Dec – We held an XP East Community meeting, following the success of our first ever Celebration of Learning event held last night.

Friday 22nd DecOur whole school Community Meeting provides a weekly opportunity to give apologies and pledges, share appreciations and make stands for things that we feel strongly about.

Whole School Community Meeting was held in the afternoon, allowing us an extra Crew session this morning. We opened our Secret Santa gifts and held a whip-round to discuss how we were intending to spend the festive break and what we might have included on our Christmas wish list.

Special thanks to Izzy for editing our blog this week.

Latest news from Crew 7DP

Monday 11th Dec- We all checked in to Crew following the weekend and then our Crew Leader shared with us the true story of Cliff Young.  In 1982 Cliff Young was a 61 year old Australian farmer. He entered an ultra-marathon from Sydney to Doncaster in Melbourne, Australia. The most remarkable thing was he didn’t know that you had to sleep. He ran in his work boots against younger, and much fitter world-class athletes, and won. He didn’t know that there a prize and refused it, and he then shared the money between the other runners. This encourages us to do things differently than they may have been done before.

Tuesday 12th Dec- Accelerated Reader. Next week we will take another literacy test.

Wednesday 13th Dec- Due to technical issues we couldn’t watch Lion that would help with our learning. So that we made productive use of Crew time, we read our Accelerated Reader books.

Thursday 14th Dec- We watched 30 minutes of Lion to anchor the text we read. These were our key notices and wonders:

  1. The people were just standing there and when Saroo was lost. He asked for a ticket for Ginestlay but he got slapped in the face and told to move.
  2. Lack of compassion in the country and ignoring him.
  3. Two different parts of India and they both speak a different language.
  4. It wasn’t a very safe place.
  5. Stronger sense of community in Ginestlay than in Calcutta.
  6. Women working on the railway.

Friday 15th DecOur whole school Community Meeting provides a weekly opportunity to give apologies and pledges, share appreciations and make stands for things that we feel strongly about.

Week Beginning 20/11/17

This week was a busy week for crew JSM.

We are unfortunately the lowest attending crew in the whole of the XP Trust. This was very disappointing to both me as a crew leader and the crew as a whole. After discussion with out crew we have established a number of strategies to support those students with less than 95% attendance as a crew. We have a long way to go to get to the top of the attendance league table, but we are confident as a crew we will get there.

We have only one crew blog entry this week due to community meetings and staff days.

Wednesday 22nd (Written by Corey A.)

Today we talked about our new conduct sheet. This is the sheet that students who do not meet expectations are recorded on and reviewed inside crew. After that everyone went outside to do clean up service but then Mr Pearson’s crew had already taken the equipment. A few minutes later crew JSM went back up to crew to talk about what we wanted to be when we are older and leave school, for example; Lewis Hutton stated that ‘I want to be an F1 driver.’ After we discussed in a whip around what we needed to get to achieve these goals everyone turned to  accelerated reading or taking a test for accelerated reading.

Crew JSM first week back!

Crew JSM have kicked off the second half term with a series of sessions focused on preparation for their student led conference (SLC). The crew have taken control of blogging their own sessions to let you know a little more about what is going on in crew.

On Monday in crew we did a check-in, with the question ‘what did we enjoy most about our two week holidays and what we did on halloween and bonfire night’. After that, we each got a post-it-note and wrote one of our character traits or howls that we need to focus on this term and identify for our SLC. Then we talked in partners and shared what we had written and discussed strategies of how to improve as a crew.

On Tuesday in Crew we have been practising and preparing for our SLC’s (student lead conference). Before the half term break we practised greetings and now we’ve moved onto watching an example of past SLCs. In the video there are people doing the conference and talking to their parents about their work and how to improve and what they’ve done especially well in their portfolio.

On Wednesday in crew we had a check in question of ‘how do we feel about our student led conference’. Some of the crew said they felt excited about the chance to show work, some feel nervous about the challenge. We then worked on our portfolios and jumped on learning targets for improve our work. We focused on bringing all our pieces of work up to the highest standards our craftsmanship and quality.

What happened in Crew 7DPE recently?

In one of our daily Crew sessions 7DPE explored the concept of “conflict” and Crew members contributed to the discussion of four key questions:

(1) What is conflict?

(2) What causes conflict?

(3) What happens to us when we experience conflict?

(4) How might we defuse or resolve conflict at school?

We considered the global conflict of interests on the Korean Peninsula, the plight of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and contemporary sources of conflict in the local and national news.

We identified the “fight or flight” reflex that sometimes governs our reactions when we experience conflict, and the physiological response to it that cannot always be controlled. 7DPE then discussed how we might defuse or resolve conflict in the school context.
