A week of highlights for Crew Turing

This week was kicked off with the most moving presentation of learning that I’ve experienced so far at XP East, with the preview of the ‘Should I stay or should I go’ documentary at Cast theatre. I remember a few weeks ago having a conversation with crew about whether the UK should welcome refugees and asylum seekers. There was a real mixed bag of responses.

Seeing and hearing my crew getting to work with the Conversation Club this term has made me immensely proud. I’ve been so impressed with how welcoming, compassionate and understanding our year 8s have been, and how important this expedition has been to them and our community. I felt a great sense of maturity from my crew, having them listen to the plight of the refugees and hearing all the work they did fundraising for the charity. I was honestly moved to tears on the night!

It was great to see students (Dylan, Alice and Reece) taking speaking parts in their roles at the PoL, and to also receive a mention for managing as a crew to raise £92.50 towards the total. Every penny will go to such an amazing cause and I hope that we can work with them more in future.

Another highlight for me as a crew leader was the release of Torran’s debut in the FA’s new feature about tackling discrimination in football (see video below). He’s had a really strong start to the year, getting just off a 4.0 for his sport MEG, and is top of Mr Nixon’s Hegarty heroes. All his hard work in extended study is truly paying off!

My crew have spent the last 2 weeks preparing for their Student Led Conferences, so the focus has mainly been getting their portfolios prepared and scripts ready for this week. However, we made sure that we still got a chance to do something a little different. I’ve asked each member of crew to prepare a crew session to be put on fortnightly. Lexi offered to do the first one and it was fantastic! She led us through the body conditioning exercises that she does at her gym:

It was fantastic to see her come into her own and take the lead. Congratulations to Reece for winning the arm resistance exercise, and Jess for holding out the longest for the wall sits. We’ll definitely be asking Lexi to put this on again for us in the run up to sports day after last years not so desirable performance….
